I have shot around 4 of them now and Erinn’s comes back to me all the time (being the first one I shot) If YOU are getting married at the Wake County Courthouse soon, THIS IS YOUR GUIDE! I will be going over steps, processes, and my favorite part: PHOTOS! You have to document this day. Raw and Real, you are goinggg to the chapel and you’re gonna get married :)
The Process: What to Expect
Marriage License – Before heading to the courthouse, you'll need to obtain a marriage license from the Wake County Register of Deeds. Both partners must be present, provide identification, and pay the fee.
Arrival at the Justice Center – On the day of your ceremony, arrive early. The Justice Center (building across from Courthouse) is designed to handle legal proceedings, including marriages, and is where magistrates officiate ceremonies. Parking can be tricky, so arriving 20-30 minutes ahead gives you time to check in and settle any nerves.
The Ceremony – Civil ceremonies are usually quick, lasting about 10-15 minutes. They take place in a designated area within the Justice Center, and you’ll likely see other couples celebrating their own special moments nearby. Some magistrates allow for personal vows, so check in advance if this is important to you.
Post-Ceremony Paperwork – After the ceremony, you’ll receive your signed marriage certificate. You may need to return to the Register of Deeds for additional copies if required.

The Justice Center interior is simple and functional, so I always recommend stepping outside for portraits. The surrounding downtown area offers fantastic backdrops—think historic buildings, charming brick walls, and scenic parks just a short walk away.

Some of the best photos from courthouse weddings come from unscripted moments—the excited nerves before walking in, the first kiss as a married couple, and the celebratory laughter afterward. I aim to document these genuine emotions while also guiding couples to find beautiful light and flattering angles.

Even though it’s a courthouse wedding, dressing up makes the experience feel extra special. Whether you opt for a sleek white dress or a chic suit, your outfit will pop beautifully against the cityscape. Small details like a bouquet or handwritten vows also add a personal touch to your photos.

After the ceremony, consider celebrating with a post-wedding session. We can explore downtown Raleigh, grab coffee at a cozy café, or head to a scenic spot like the Raleigh Rose Garden for additional portraits.
